Is emotional intelligence lacking in college students?  The behaviors evidenced on college campuses in the past two weeks say they are!  Indeed, the lack of understanding and concern for others well-being is obvious.  Not only are these IQ smart young people not social distancing but rarely  are we witnessing masks as they party and spray each other perhaps with Covid-19. How did we raise a generation of socially irresponsible young adults lacking emotional intelligence?

How Did We Raise A Socially Irresponsible Generation of College students and Young Adults?

We must take a look at the people who are parenting college students and young adults.  Lo and behold, the answer lies in the generation who raised them. We’ve seen an accumulation of behaviors presented over the last two decades that suggest the strong emphasis on materialism and self-absorption. A culture standing on its material wealth and lack of concern for millions socially discriminated against suffers low emotional intelligence.  Without a doubt, emotional intelligence provides a social consciousness and awareness of the ramifications of ones actions. Both not seen in the current displays of behaviors country-wide.  Research has shown that leadership from the top down is crucial.

Leadership From The Top Down is Crucial

Leadership whether it be of the country, the state, the county, the community or the family remains crucial in the development of its counterparts. A democracy allows the freedom of choice on many levels.  Democracy in a family certainly enhances the ability to make choices and mistakes, especially without recrimination. Parental leadership and mentoring presents a culture of emotional intelligence where the choices made are for the good of the family. Moreover, children develop with feelings of empathy, self-confidence, can delay gratification and manage their emotions. They become accountable for their actions, learn to support friends and show gratefulness when appropriate.

Our country’s leadership has only reinforced the many cracks that our education and child development suffers. Wake up, Please! Emotional Intelligence is 80% the reason we are successful in life.  EQ raises IQ.
